For Christmas, Hubby gave me a gift card to a local salon where spa services are available. He suggested a massage or facial. Sounded good, but then I thought it would be fun to have my hair and make-up done for our night out on New Year’s Eve, so off to the salon I went.
I have short hair, so there’s not a lot that can be done with it. Yet, the guy who did my hair didn’t do the greatest job. He said, “Let’s go for that big party girl hair!” Tease and lift away he did. So I was rockin’ my Kentucky Big Hair as I headed to the make-up chair.
I tend to go more natural with my make-up, playing up my eyes a bit, which are brown. I gravitate toward warm earth tones, browns, creams, maybe a light pink.
Here’s me taking a photo of myself, going out to some random function over the summer. Not sure why I appear so startled; perhaps I could see into the future to New Year’s Eve and what the makeup lady would do to my face. Anyhoo, this photo gives you an idea of how I normally wear my make-up and what the lady had to work with.
The young woman who did my makeup wanted to go crazy with my eyes and boy did she ever. She picked out some startling shades of green. I don’t do green eye shadow. But she assured me that the color was more subtle once applied on the eyelid. Hmm. My little voice inside was saying “Hell to the no!” But, then I thought, “Be adventurous! Try something new! It’s Aveda, what could go wrong?” Oy.
So, I get home with a few minutes to spare before I have to pick up the babysitter. I march upstairs to get dressed, but I refuse to look at my husband. He keeps saying, “Let me see!” I keep my head down saying, “No, I look like a drag queen.” Finally, I show him the full effect and his neck jerks back a bit. “Wow.” I shake my head as I take a brush to my big hair and make-up remover to my eyes. My husband asks, “Is it because you have big eyes that make-up artists want to experiment with you?” Again, I just shake my head. Who knows? Anyway, I tone down the eye make-up (some) and the hair, pick up the babysitter and then we head out to ring in the new year with friends.
We ended up having a great night and I learned that, for the most part, I can do my own hair and make-up pretty well. I should have used the card for its original intention and scheduled a massage. Oh, well. Live and learn. :)

I have big eyes as well and big lips! I remember getting my makeup done one time - it was so bad!!! Dark eye shadow plus RED lipstick! eek! I legitimately think I could have gotten straight out of the chair and joined the circus! Oh well, glad you had fun! Love you hair!
Wait.. after that build-up, you didn't post a picture? Was it really as bad as my imagination is thinking?
Oh, I have so been there, done that! I am NOT a red lipstick girl, but I had one makeup artist paint my lips so red that I was sure I looked like Bozo the clown - NOT a good look! That's a really cute picture of you from the summer, I really wish I could wear my hair in a cute short style like yours but my face is too round.
You look gorgeous in that photo! I laughed out loud when reading your post. I'm bummed that there is no photo of the 'after' you from the salon.
Believe me, I was not about to take a photo of that red hot mess! Nope, not gonna do it! :)
I'm right there with you with the big eyes! I always have makeup artists who think they'll do one thing (because of the large canvas, I suppose) and then end up having to completely redo it because it looked dreadful on me! I hope you had a good night, nonetheless!
Damn....we wanted to see that hot mess....I bet you actually looked quite hot...
Boy, I wish you would have posted a picture. Sometimes when we get made over by someone else it is just that we are not use to seeing ourselves look completly different. Anyway, I am glad you had a good time at your party.
Am I allowed to laugh? Just a little? That could have so been me.
OHHHH! Wish you had a picture of the after on what they did to you! You are too cute and make me want to chop my hair back off! Love it!
Jen, You're so cute in that pic! I had a similar experience w/ a make-up artist before a photo shoot. Let's just say I looked like a drag queen, too. Just dirty. I think you do have to go through it just once...so that you don't do it again before something really important (like a photo shoot). xo
Valentine´´s is around the corner .. hope you get a gift card for a relaxing massage and afternoon!! you look great! Hi there my friend.. hello from the heart of Buenos Aires!! I have missed your wondeful posts... I am finally at a hotel with great WIFI and no voltage converter for my lap top...but the hotel business centre is a little less busy today ..and so I don´´t feel guilty taking up computer time...Hope the new year has gotten off to a great start.. will catch up when I am back on North American soil... XO HHL
What, no picture?! :) I laugh because I've only had my make up done once, when I was a teenager and my mom took me to Clinique to learn to go beyond the Mary Kay light blue eye shadow and very pink lip gloss I started with at 14. I still buy and wear the same Clinique make up, in the same way as I did when I was 15! Ha! Such a sad situation!!
this is funny b/c i had something happen to me at a salon/spa too. oh, it was terrible. i'm the same way about keeping things simple and i told the m/u artist this. oh dear. when she turned me around in that chair i almost said, 'serious? am i on candid camera?' i just knew i was. when i walked through the salon to get my friend i felt like everybody was staring at me. oh, it was horrid. i looked like a hooker!
I'm with you, too much eye make up makes me look like a trannie
xoxo

Why do they always want to make you look like you work the streets? We've all been there my friend ~ no photo needed :)
Jo
