Winter Shorts Trend or 'Back to the 90's'

When I was in college in the early-to-mid 1990s, one of the big fashion trends for the preppy set was wool walking shorts worn with tights. Often you wore them with a nice sweater and one of those large belt buckles that you could trade out. I had a horse buckle, as well as lion heads. I think they’re still somewhere in my dresser.

Anyhoo, now it appears that this trend had returned for the fall and winter of 2010. Although, this time around, the shorts are a bit, well, shorter and often worn with high heels. To this, I say, “No.” Now the look is more Boho Chic, rather than preppy. In some cases, almost sloppy looking. If I were to jump into this trend again, I’d wear a pair of loafers or ballet flats - maybe riding boots - and make sure the heam line is a tad longer than what the young’uns are wearing.

Last Sunday I saw a woman wearing a pair of wool shorts in a fabulous pink herringbone, in what I consider to be the appropriate length. She wore it with a gorgeous pink cashmere turtleneck. Never mind the fact that its 80 degrees outside, she looked great. I wish I had asked her where she purchased them. But is that the appropriate thing to do in church? Even after mass? Probably not. I'm not there to people watch. Shame on me. (And, cue the Catholic guilt.)

So, what do you think of the return of wool walking shorts? Like/dislike?

P.S. – For those of you who are fans of “The Sound of Music,” be sure to watch or DVR tomorrow’s Oprah Winfrey show. She’s going to have the entire cast on her show, including Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. She also plans to have members of the actual Von Trapp family there as well. I can’t wait to watch it with my daughter!

not sure if I will adapt this trend.. but definitely flats and ballet slippers would be appropriate ... riding boots may also be an alternate option... xo HHL

I remember wearing my corduroy ones with tights and a ribbon around my ponytail all 1st semester in college, but I was alone. everyone asked me why I dressed up for class. so embarrassing! I still love the look, I have tweed ones and wear them with thick ribbed tighs and tall boots.

i think every new fashion trend is fun, but
just can't participate in all of them. a pair
of wool short with tights would be considered.

my girls look adorable in anything and are
constantly challenging me to not be an old
woman yet. :)

love,

I remember wearing these the first time around with tights and loafers. I had a pair of autumn-toned houndstooth shorts that I loved and wore with a hunter green turtleneck, navy tights, and weejuns. I also had a pair of dark denim ones that I wore a lot. This is a trend I might re-visit if the length and cut were perfect!

I think for some, it would be a darling look. I like the idea of it.

I had several pairs back in the day and wore them with tights and flats ~ loved them. I'm not sure if I can pull off that look so many years later.

Ok... Loved the look in my twenties - AND they were Bermuda length. Not too sure about short shorts on this 40 yr old!

I actually love them as long as they are well...long enough. You could never wear them up here though...too cold!

This trend takes me back to lower school when my mom had me decked out in tights, wool shorts, and kiddie ballet flats. It looks great when done correctly but I dont think I will be jumping on this trend bandwagon.

Love the Shorts and probably will own a pair soon! This post makes me excited! I had a wool pair in the 90's even if I could find them, they would have to be for my one of my girls considering it would be a size 0! Thanks for posting on it, added some inspiration!
