Never had I thought I would utter those words, but when you're a mom of two active - and quickly growing - kids, at some point, it crosses your mind.
So, dear friends, I'm reaching out to you for opinions on mini vans and other SUVs. Did you trade in a less practical car for a mini van? Were you happy with your decision? If not a mini van, did you buy a larger vehicle that can transport four or more passengers in the back seat area? No, I'm not giving birth to more children. But, I recently wanted to take my kids and two of their friends to a movie. Alas, I didn't have enough room because no one was old enough to sit in the front seat, and I couldn't fit all four in the back.
Please share your thoughts on this topic - would love to hear it!

Yes I had a minivan. A Toyota Previa. It's still around, 210K miles worth of it. Never regretted the purchase, and much more planet-friendly than the ostensibly "cooler" SUVs.
Right around the time I got it, though, I also bought some Doc Martens:).
Oh, this is the big debate in our house. I desperately want a Volvo wagon for our next car (or will they go out of business??) but if we have a third, the notion of all three kids crammed in the back all the time would drive me CRAZY!! So then we would go to a minivan or a Ford Flex. My two best friends who both have 3 boys drive Chrysler T&Cs and love them. Two other friends with 4 kids drive suburbans and love those minus the gas prices. I've ridden in a Ford Flex a few times and really love it- it is long but I like it better than the HUGE suvs.
Nothing beats a Jeep Grand Cherokee....or Ford Explorer
I had three boys and dogs and I could not face the minivan either. So we bought a Suburban and I drove it until everyone was out of school. Expensive and a gas guzzler, guilty, on that account. But the Suburban gave me still more room for the animals and sports equipment, and that was my reasoning.

With two teenagers in the house there's more a discussion about how many cars, instead of the size. I understand your reflections but I can't give you any advice as we always have had two "small" cars instead of a van.
We had a Tahoe that got quite a bit of use. When they went off to college it even held a futon!
We bought a Volvo v-70 when our first son was born. After daughter was born 2 britax carseats filled the back seat. No room for playdate after preschool. Husband kept the v-70 and we purchased the Volvo xc90 for me. Seats 7. We have a pop up buster in the 2nd row. LOVE the xc90. It doesn't feel too big for me and my 2 kiddos. Perfect for family trips and it is easy to pull up the 3rd and pile in more kids.
Ok, as a former mini-van and enormous luxury SUV owner I can honestly say NOTHING compares to the convenience of the mini van. Ok, did I REALLY say that????
I had the Sienna XLE fully loaded decked to the 9s bells and whistles... and while she was no beaut on the outside, the inside was IDENTICAL to my Lexus LX470... save for the Minivan had TONS more legroom, cupholders, storage... the fold-down 3rd row (the lexus also had but much smaller) was like owning another home, there was so much room back there! And the damn thing cost about half what the SUV did.
We traded in the minivan for the SUV.... during the throes of my horrid divorce I lost the SUV and had to find myself a set of wheels. I have a car... a very nice car. A beautiful luxury car that I purchased pre-owned. I did this because the gas on my SUV was Redonculously insane for my now non-existing budget and I do love my mileage. HOWEVER I really really miss not having a larger car. (And the minivan's mileage is not that horrific.)
AEOT - DO NOT GET THE VOLVO wagon. I had it and LOVED it. But you will be amazed that you will outgrow that car almost as soon as you get into it. Soon the boys are going to want playdates, to carpool etc and you won't be able to. I will tell you this, Volvo will NEVER go out of business! :)

Any update on your pick, JMW? Personally, I think it's much practical to own a minivan. No matter how you put it, it would still be better to use a car, where everyone will be able to fit in comfortably. Ava@Elite Toyota
