Back to Reality

Actress Diane Lane at the 2010 Kentucky Derby. She's starring in the film "Secretariat," due out October. 8.

The hoopla of Derby has come to an end and now it’s time to return to reality. Hope I didn’t bore you last week with the endless talk about horses, juleps and hats.

Our party went off without a hitch and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Okay, there was one hitch. For about 40 minutes, we lost power. Apparently a car hit a utility pole in the area and about 1,300 households were out. But, once it came back on, all was good. Alas, I didn’t have the winner, Super Saver. Why I didn’t bet on this horse is beyond me. Jockey Calvin Borel has an amazing racing record and Super Saver is a mudder, so considering the horrible weather we had that day, it was a match made in heaven. I bet Paddo O’Prado to win, but he came in third. Oh, well.

The Hollywood and sports celebs were out in full force this year, staking their spots on Millionaires’ Row. Those in attendance included Justin Timberlake, Diane Lane, Tom Brady, Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell, Terry O’Quinn (Locke from “Lost), Bode Miller, Johnny Weir, Dr. J., Jamie Pressley, Terrell Owens, Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz, Oscar Nunez (“The Office”), Smokey Robinson and so many more. Not sure when it happened, but Derby has turned into quite the star event.

Diane Lane is such a class act – loved her ensemble for the Derby (see above). She also served as grand marshal of the Pegasus Parade, since she’s starring in the film “Secretariat,” based on the story of the amazing Triple Crown winner. Of course, a great deal of it was filmed in Kentucky. The film is due out in October 2010.

If you bet on the Derby, hope you had a winner. By the way, did you see the guy who won the Visa contest and bet the $100,000? He bet Super Saver and won $900,000! Now he can buy a decent toupee. Sheesh.

hee hee! he's going to be reading
about his bad toupe everywhere.

you are too funny to mention it.

diane lane is perfection. i love how she
is aging so gracefully.

i was thinking that you have personified
the saying, "write what you know." this
has been such fun for those of us who
will never go to a horse race.

I really enjoyed your Derby post. I agree with LPC that photo does like like you would have had you scored your tickets.

I enjoyed all your fun and informational derby posts ~ looking forward to next year. Too funny ~ those were my exact words when I saw him ~ if he had the ability to bet that amount, he should have been able to afford something a little more natural looking ~ I think The Donald may have some competition ;)

oh what fun! glad you had a great time despite rain and power outages! i actually did pick the winner (only by chance and out of a hat) but won $100! I was thrilled. it was great to get caught up in the hoopla with you. my yankee neighbors truly enjoyed this taste of the south we introduced them to, and we plan on making it an annual event!

Oh my gosh you are toooo funny. When Mr. Visa was jumping up and down I thought he was going to lose the toup!
You know, I have to say, ugggh, the Derby is much prettier on NBC. I love the nostalgia of Derby and Churchill. But I always want to tell the hollywood peeps to go home...Next year we will watch from our own backyard, well actually Keeneland. Great to visit with you.

We watched the man as he realized his win. It was great fun especially after watching Super Saver advance to win. Do you know how that man was chosen to bet the $100,000? We never heard them explain that.

Diane Lane is just lovely - I've always been a fan of hers! And I'm still laughing about that guy's terrible toupee - at least now he has the money to buy a much better headpiece!
