Who does your hair?

So, I’m working at the Junior League event last Saturday, manning the inflatable jumpy (you know, that IS the technical term for those things), when this mom walks up with her three kids. I saw her arrive earlier in the morning and knew that I must talk to her. Why? Because she had the cutest darn haircut I had ever seen! So, trying to appear like the cool event organizer, I saddle up next her, exchange some pleasantries and then ask this complete stranger the age-old question: “Do you mind if I ask who does your hair?”

I’ve done this before to strangers, be it at the mall, on the street, wherever. There’s always a bit of worry that they’re going to think you’re a complete psycho. But, most people agree that that’s the best way to find your next stylist. Thankfully, this woman’s reply was, “Aren’t you sweet! I go to (insert salon name).” I was jazzed because this salon is not far from my house and it’s an Aveda salon. I’m not necessarily thinking of jumping ship with my current stylist, though. I found her after a long search and I’ve been pretty happy with the results. But, should I ever need to change, I have a good second in my back pocket.

Above are pics of some celebrity styles I just love (the pic of Sienna Miller’s short hair is very similar to the mom I saw on Saturday). What celeb hairstyles do you like? I’m not the only person who accosts strangers with the hair question, am I?

You and I like similar hair cuts. The problem I have is I am not blond, and aside from Winona, all of those cuts are blond. I tend to gravitate towards blond cuts. I recently had someone ask me where I get my hair cut and I was flattered, not freaked out. Which made me realize I need to ask people that more often.

I have a fantastic stylist too, but I always ask! I love all the pics. I have been trying to let my hair grow out a bit...but these photos make me want to cut it off again.

Oh, do share the name of that Aveda salon, please! I love my stylist, but sometimes it is difficult to get in to see her...

I think that it is quite a compliment. In asking someone about her stylist, you are telling her that her cut or color is so good that you want to replicate the results.

I have moved around a bit in the past few years, and I know that a stylist has been the most difficult service to locate. When I lived in what I think is your town, I went to the big-chain Aveda salon with the single-initial name. Great service (their spa treatments are divine as well) and the price is surprisingly right!

I have only had a hand full of stylists over the years...I would probably ask especially if I was in need. My main worry of moving to another state is finding the right stylist.

I love it when anyone asks me about my hair. Keeps me away from the Scrunchies too.

I go to an Aveda Concept Salon and adore the woman who cuts my hair! I think it's a great idea to ask when you see something you like.

Not at all! I have done the same thing! A lot of times at work I will HAVE to ask a woman where she gets her nails done because they are just so pretty!

I LOVE S Millers hair cut in that picture! I too go to an Aveda salon in Bham. I couldn't love my stylist more! I so badly want to go a little shorter but am terrified of a chunky monkey face! This might have just given me the courage to go shorter! It'll grow back, right??!!

Believe me, you are not alone. The first time I accosted someone with that question it was uncomfortable. But hey, we girls have to do what we have to do.
I wish I had Demi's hair. It's that shine, looks so healthy. Plus, I've never..ever had long, long hair. Love the pic of Sienna's hair too. A++

Such guilt and anxiety caused by our hair. I admit that I've asked for the name of stylists for cuts and color...and felt a bit anxious in phasing the question just right, as not to appear that I was stalking. At the same time, I've felt guilt about considering a new salon and stylist.

Once I've determined that I've flattered the person with my question of who and where, I go directly to what I consider the more important questions: texture and products. I've discovered that even with the perfect cut or color, the 'look' I love on another person comes from having the right hair for the cut and the right products. When I'm asked about my hair, I freely offer the who/where, but I always reveal that my hair is very fine, and for me, it's about good products - gels, cremes, sprays, spritzers, etc.

Best wishes, NM.
PS I love Winona's hair and have often asked random strangers about their hair stylist!
