A dapper bow tie for Easter Sunday

The annual White House Easter Egg Roll (He's a determined little guy, isn't he?)

Easter, the highest of holy days, is this Sunday. My family and I are planning to arrive extra early to 10 a.m. Mass, as the C&E Christians will be making their bi-annual appearance, therefore seating will be at a premium.

As a child, Easter was always a time to get a new dress in pretty pastel colors. And while you dressed for spring, the weather wouldn’t always cooperate. It could be cold with snow flurries, downright balmy or quite pleasant. Even if it was cold, you were determined to brave the brutal weather, because nothing would stop you from wearing that lovely new dress, even if it was covered by your winter coat.

So, this begs the question, what should you or shouldn’t you wear on Easter? It’s technically spring, but not Memorial Day, so therefore are white shoes out of the question? Is it okay for little girls to wear white patent leather shoes, black patent leather or either one? Do guys break out the seersucker yet? Purists would say that seersucker shouldn’t see the light of day until late May, but where I live, Derby Day tends to be the exception for seersucker, as well as certain white attire.

I’m planning to wear a skirt and sweater set on Easter. I need to get a pedicure this week as well, in case I’m daring enough to wear open-toed shoes. I just hate the thought of my bare legs peeking out from under a skirt. Ugh, I need a tan, pronto!

While I won’t be wearing a hat, I do like seeing the ladies in church donning their wide-brimmed chapaeux. You have to admit that Easter Sunday is a fabulous people-watching day!

So, any Easter attire dos or don’ts that you recommend?

all depends on your geography- it would be less odd for a man in your neck of the woods to wear seersucker (if the weather cooperated) than for a man in MN to do the same. no white shoes. unless you're under 6 years old. I usually do a lbd with some sort of fitted blazer- linen or boucle depending on the weather- and then a fun pair of pastel slingbacks.

What a fun post! Agreed with QBS that geography plays a major part in the 'rules'....as a child growing up down South, I always remember pastel smocked Easter dresses with white lacy socks and black patent leather shoes (white tights if it was a little chilly outside). Then we moved to the East Coast to the beach for about 10 years until I went off to college, and the dress code was more beach-casual on Easter (Lilly dresses, cardigans, bare legs, even dressy sandals for Easter mass). Where my parents live in D.C. it is pretty formal, e.g. suits and hats as you mentioned.

Definitely fun for people watching! Your outfit sounds pretty...and I'm with you on needing a tan!! :) Hope the kitchen is coming together just the way you envisioned it!

We must say pastels and whites are top of the list.

I have 2 little girls and love dressing them in the cute dresses, although one is not so in to it anymore. But as for the shoes, you can only get white this time of year. I just went this weekend to get some for the littlest girl and all they had were spring colors. So I think it is perfectly acceptable, especially since the dresses are light colors. Thanks for sharing.

Fun post. I typically stick to the 'rules' related to the calendar of appropriate dress. However, when Easter falls in April, I feel the rules can be a bit more relaxed.

Like you, I love the Easter fashion parade at church - especially the children.

My boys have worn seersucker... but then I AM in South Carolina. We breed seersucker!

I say white on and after Easter...

I must admit that I stick to the "rules!" Living in the north, there have been Easters when I'm actually wearing pastel wools just to keep warm.

Sadly we are expecting sleet and snow this weekend so I suspect that any 'proper' attire will go out the window as we hunt for warm clothes...also out the window are the garden parties we had planned to attend. But as a child in Arizona, we always had our Easter Seersucker pastel dresses...

My new hat and "spring coat" -- a category of dressing that no longer exists was one of the most exciting events of the year. My coat was always navy.

It's too bad about hats in general. I do love them. At least everyone tends to wear them to weddings over here.

This is so strange for me to read as it is still so hot here in Brisbane, Australia yet we are in the first few weeks of Autumn! I just wish that we could have a cold Christmas or Easter so that I could wear all of these lovely sounding clothes. I am afraid that I will probably be wearing something very casual and that it will keep me cool!

I hope that you and your beautiful family have a truly happy and blessed Easter and that the Easter bunny brings lots of sweets for everyone!

Best wishes,
Natasha.
