Last summer, while attending a music festival, I purchased the above “I used to be cool” T-shirt. I bought one for my daughter, too, that stated “My mom used to be cool.” Not to put myself down, it’s just a fun way to mock my current lifestyle of mom, living in the ‘burbs. I don’t have a minivan, but I do drive a station wagon (although, it’s a sporty German car. Does that increase my cool factor a bit?)
Anyhow, I imagine we all feel this way from time to time. Remember those days in college? Staying up until all hours, doing God-knows-what and looking fabulous in the process? Now, many of us are 30-somethings, raising kids, working, paying mortgages, and in desperate need of a good nap. But, here’s hoping we still look fabulous in the process. In my case, it involves a little more under-eye concealer than before (hence the need for a good nap).
Perhaps I shouldn’t be so hard on myself and start sporting the “I will always be cool” T-shirt. Because, after I drop the kids off at daycare in the morning, I do rock out on the XM Radio a bit. And, this morning after leaving the parking garage, two construction workers gave me the “up and down” as I passed by. I should probably be annoyed or even offended by this, but on days when you’re feeling like an old mom past your prime, it kind of lifts your spirits. I guess it’s the little things that get you by from time to time. (Is that a sad comment? Hopefully I’m not the only one who feels this way.)
So, dear readers, may we always embrace our “cool” side and not let life get us down. Remember, we’re still cool. We may not always feel like it, but it’s there, not too far beneath the surface. We may just need to wake it up. Coolness needs a nap every now and then, too, you know. :)

chin up- I think you are cool- if you weren't, you wouldn't be able to poke fun at yourself. as much fun as it was "back then," just think about all of the doubts/worries/self-obsession that went on- we get better and shinier as the years go... in my book at least!
keep on being great and rocking out to XM!
PS- a german wagon = the coolest of the cool of vehicles designed to haul stuff around.
Love this post! I like to think I'm still cool ~ it just takes me a little longer in the morning to achieve the look!
I'm right there with you and the XM radio and there is nothing wrong about feeling good that someone is taking notice of you.
Wait until you're little ones are teenagers ~ they'll let you know what's cool and what's not! : )
Jo
i am not a mother but i am getting older (as we all are) and i think being cool is a state of mind. if we are comfortable with ourselves then we can be as cool as we were years ago! sometimes i feel better now in my 40's then i did in my 20's...take risks, have fun, laugh at yourself and stay cool!
Oh, this is good... I MUST get one of those shirts! I always tease that I use to be cool, but now I'm a nerd. I like my nerdiness, and I think you are still cool!
That t shirt cracks me up!!! I may need to try and find one for myself. Some days I still got it, other days..not so much!!
